Building in timber is an ancient craft whose humble origins were transformed when box-type timber framing was created during the Mediaeval Age. Through the use of innovative jointing techniques, larger, robust buildings were feasible and timber framing became the most common form of building. Because of its strength, the pre-eminent wood for construction has been oak which is used unseasoned in its green state before it has dried and hardened. The durability of oak means older buildings remain fundamentally sound today even though some were built centuries ago.
We offer a comprehensive bespoke design and build service with an oak frame being pre-fabricated in our workshops and delivered to site. Our team of craftsmen offer an exceptional level of ability where the realisation of a design develops into a beautiful, hand-built oak structure through care and attention to every detail. Having a fundamental knowledge of older buildings transposes into an ability to produce beautiful new buildings quite unique in every detail and very unlike the mass produced, modular examples fashionable today. As specialist companies have simplified the framing process, there has been a loss of something intrinsic with small timbers often used and any oak not in true alignment rejected. The result can sometimes be soulless. In comparison, the true beauty of oak can be seen in all our structures as we choose
robust timbers and happily incorporate bends and curves into designs. The wood used in our work is sourced with each project in mind and is unique to a particular customerís requirements.
