Whilst thatch and timber framing are ancient crafts, they are equally important to the 21st century. Fully sustainable, renewable and substantially built, a new oak-framed structure will last for centuries and become increasingly beautiful as it matures. Now seen as the most ‘green’ of building materials, timber and thatch are being used in new and exciting contemporary homes. Banned long ago in towns, thatch has struggled to compete with modern building materials until now. Today, its high insulating qualities and sustainable credentials have seen it introduced even into high-density housing on modern estates.
The niche market of small, select developments with one or two thatched houses continues to attract buyers willing to pay a premium for a thatched home. In the last few years, traditional timber framing has become popular for bespoke homes where space allows the construction of some truly fabulous buildings.
